A year ago
End of summer 2017 I could attend for the first time MUTEK Montreal. I had the full pass and got equally excited and disappointed. But that's normal, if you can see almost all the program, you can't like all, worst case you leave or wait for the next show, best case you are hypnotised by what you see, listen, experience. This happened two or three times, one of them was at the Metropolis before it changed its name with a performance from Canadian artist Sara Davachi.
I did what I usually do after discovering a new musical universe, I listen. Spotify, BandCamp, Soundcloud you name it to immerse myself in this new world to check if this live performance did happen by chance or if there is really something I feel connected to.
This year now
End of summer 2018, the artist is coming back to Montreal at the occasion of a Redbull Music Festival a the Triptyque event, playing in a church Le Gesu. Three performances on the program, I will attend two. Screenshot of my ticket on my phone I enter the church shortly before 8pm.
Immediat wahou effect while entering the space, it's dark, many ray of lights simulating sun light penetrating the space, fake grass on the nave where the benches have been removed, a lot of foliage and greenery on stage. The performing artists are on three levels, ground, first floor and second level where the organ is located. The first show has a string quartet playing on the ground, two dancers, an organ player and a choir. It's attended, no big surprise but it sets the mood properly.
Live mixing and hypnotic body
Second show is the reason I show up. Sara Davachi is playing the pipe organ, a musician is playing French horn below, a cello player and voice on the ground. If the organ/horn and cello players are facing the audience the artist using her voice as instrument has her denuded back turned toward us. Closing your eyes the sounds coming from all these sources is tangling harmoniously, opening your eyes watching the singer shoulder and back moving, initiating the sounds is really impressive and beautiful.
Always a pleasure to witness the fusion between a musician and his/her instrument, when the artist is the instrument it's something else.I leave the church full of sounds waves and images in my head. Follow by a stop at a whiskey bar to open the soon coming autumn season and continuing the discussion with another musician, it's getting colder but the bike ride home under the moon light along the canal is pretty ok.

Premier Mutek
Below in broken English
Le pitch
On n'y croyait plus et pourtant il la fait, le pass Mutek pour tout voir. Impression un peu mitigée le premier jour, à savoir est-ce que ca valait vraiment la peine de prendre ce pass? Au fur et à mesure je m'y suis fait. Mais focalisons nous sur les bons points. Beaucoup de musique électronique, des performances parfois foireuses, souvent répétitives (mais bon...) ou suprenante comme celle de Grajam Dunning, parfois des ambiances bien planantes et les mix live au déjeuner Place des Arts vraiment cool, gratuit et donc ouvert à tous.
Clash des cultures
Mix du midi, je mange mon sandwich et écoute le set de Borchi qui mouille le maillot derrière ses platines et doucement ma gentillesse légendaire fait effet et attire les cas sociaux, un du moins... en effet une personne assise sur les marches à côté de moi, age indéfini sans etre vieux mais d'une autre époque, tenait vraiment à communiquer sur le fait que ce n'est pas de la musique... j'ai bien essayer de lui dire qu'il en fallait pour tous les goûts et que niveau diversité musicale le Quartier des Spectacles a une programmation plus qu'hétéroclite tout l'été... ce sur quoi il a dit hmmm, un peu comme une vache, complètement comme une vache, repérant que j'étais francais j'ai eu le droit à un vive De Gaulle, c'était mieux avant, décalage quand tu nous tiens... le temps pour moi de retourner au bureau.
Les découvertes
Le bon côté du pass, il te permet de passer d'une salle à l'autre quand un show t'ennuie. Jeudi soir donc, transition du SAT au Métropolis après un tour sur l'esplanade des Arts ou Borchi enflammait le l'espace ouvert à nouveau, confirmation de son set au déjeuner.
Entrée donc dans le Métropolis où le temps semble suspendu, les gens ne bougent pas ou peu, lumière venant du fond de la scène, je m'approche, des gens assis part terre qui écoute l'artiste Sarah Davachi qui ambiance à coup d'ambiant, très planant, rencontre du troisième type-esque, enfin un truc prenant. La suite c'est un autre set dit de drone, des bruits de drones donc ou de soufflerie, de grésillement, un régal. Vivement demain.
Enormes spectacles au Musée Monument National! Et ce deux jours de suite avec entre autre Murcof et autre Herman Kolgen qui fût une belle claque visuelle et sonore.
Le freak show
J'ai vu quelques monstres aussi, au sens laideur du terme, probablement pas des gens mauvais, mais chaque évènement musical est toujours l'occasion de voir une faune improbable. Dès qu'on s'aventure dans des soirées aux courants improbables (encore une fois) les gens présents se cherchent souvent une identité visuelle et sonore qui se démarquent de celles qui existent déjà, le résultat n'est pas toujours à la hauteur (j'ai un Phd d'université en ligne en sociologie comportementale, je vous remercie).

But day after day I got used to it and made the best of it, so let's focus on the good impressions I had. A lot of electronic music, a few crappy performances, often repetitive (I know electronic music...) or surprising performances as the one from Grajam Dunning, sometimes mind-blowing and the super cool free dj sets at lunch time Place des Arts.

Lunch dj set, I'm eating my beloved sandwich while enjoying the set from Borchi jumping around his turntables, he is in place for good! Then my legendary kindness is making his effect by attracting loosers... indeed a person seated next to me is mubling how this is not music, he want the crowd around him to know about it. I try to tell him that all music tastes are it in the nature, and that the various festivals that take place here all along the summer season are wide in term of music choices... eventually he found out I'm French so I got the "it was better before and hurra for De Gaulle" and yes we are in 2017... I finish my lunch and let him ruminate this frustration, poor people.

The good side of the pass, if a show is boring I can always switch places. Thursday evening I left SAT for the Metropolis with a short visit on the outdoor location where the same Mexican artist Borchi is having a second set and is still full of communicative energy.
Entering the Metropolis, time seems to be suspended, nobody is moving or seems so, light from backstage toward the crowd, I'm getting closer, people seated on the floor listenning to the Canadian artist Sarah Davachi who is entertaining us with beautiful ambiant waves, very trippy, third encounter-ish atmosphere, delightful. It's bringing me joy for the rest of the festival. Her live is followed by a drone sound like performance, lovely interferences for your ears.
Amazing shows at Musée Monument National! Two days in a row with among others Murcof and Herman Kolgen who left me happy and astonished .
The freak show
I have seen a few monster as well, like super ugly people, not bad people, just ugly. Each musical event is dragging a nightlife fauna that always surprises me, they are part of the show. The more obscure is the musical genre the more obscure is the sens of fashion, people trying to be different by any means, the result isn't always charming (I have an online Phd degree in behavorial sociology, you are welcome).
